Reading: Psalm 145

As a child, my family didn’t celebrate Advent. There was no candled wreath, no calendars, no nightly traditions.

But, in our own way, we still created space. We put together our ancient artificial tree, sprinkled fake “snow” over the tops of bookcases, and strung tiny white lights outside.

Preparations began inside and outside our home.

As I’ve grown, the idea of Advent stirs inside me the desire for something more. I long to prepare my heart for Jesus.

I’m drawn to the quiet, the cozy, the nearness of God in this season. I have a deep desire to move close to him, make praise the focus of the season, and prepare myself for his arrival.

It’s almost as if the soft lights of the Christmas tree make me more aware of the soft voice of the Lord.

During Advent, we wait for the coming of Christ. We look forward to his arrival as a tiny infant while simultaneously looking forward to the unknown day of his second coming.

To wait well, we should know who or what we’re waiting for.

We know what Christmas looks like: presents, trees, family gatherings. We envision homey fireplaces draped with stockings, snow-covered roofs, and candles. Green and red are the colors of the season.

We know Christmas is coming because we know what to look for. Symbols of the season alert us to Christmas’s arrival, just like the characteristics of God tell us when he’s working.

Psalm 145 gives us some insight into who God is. We read that, among other characteristics, he is worthy of praise (v. 3), righteous (v. 7), everlasting (v. 13), and near to all who call on him (v. 18).

When we’re familiar with someone’s character, we know what to expect from them. We know how that person will react, and we’re able to recognize them and their work when we see it.

The same is true with Advent waiting. When we know who or what we’re waiting for, the wait becomes easier.

As we prepare to meet with God during Advent, may we watch for him with eager anticipation. May we know who we’re waiting for and be on the lookout. May we recognize his work when we see it.

Journal prompt: Write down some of God’s characteristics. How might you be able to recognize these characteristics?
